SHAWNIGAN LAKE SCHOOL
Shawnigan Lake School - Malahat School opened as the first public school in Shawnigan Lake in 1893. Land for the schoolhouse had been acquired from the E & N Railway. The wooden school building measured 20 feet x 34 feet. The first teacher was Miss Mabel Wolfenden. It was replaced by a new schoolhouse in 1914.
In 1918 the school name was changed by provincial mandate to Shawnigan Lake School. The school was closed in 1950. The buildings and land were sold to the Catholic diocese and the two former school buildings, the one built 1893, and the second built 1914, became Our Lady Queen of the World Catholic Church. The Church was sold in 2015 and today the community is trying to preserve the original buildings.
