A.B. GREENWELL SCHOOL
A . B. Greenwell school opened its doors to students in September 1969, replacing the earlier Bridge/Bell Tower School. It was named after Archie Greenwell, a Lake Cowichan pioneer who had devoted 27 years as chairman of the Lake Cowichan School Board.
The school was designed as an “open area” school and students were taught under this open area philosophy for many years in this unique environment. Sadly, in February of 2008, due to high mould contamination, the school was closed, and the students and staff were moved into the Yount school location, which had previously been closed in June 2006.
Subsequent investigations found the school beyond economical repair and the building was permanently closed in June 2013.
